In 1976 or 1977 Tom and Linda moved to Houston. The country was experiencing a recession but Houston was booming. Tent cities were going up to handle the influx of people. Jobs were plentiful and the pay was good. Tom and Linda along with his brother Ron and his wife Angie moved to Houston. Tom and Linda lived for many years in Spring, Texas, a Houston suburb. Tom worked for a supermarket chain where he was primarily responsible for the opening of new stores in East Texas and Louisiana.

Tom and Linda divorced about 1990. Tom came back to South Bend for a brief visit in March of 1996. On March 28 he had a massive heart attack. He was always very healthy so it was a complete shock. In July of 1996, while recuperating, he suffered a stroke which left him with some cognitive impairment and without the use of his left leg and left arm. After hospitalization and physical therapy, Tom entered a long-term care facility in Elkhart, Indiana. Tom walked as well as he could up and down the hallway of that place. Day and night. After years of effort, Tom is now able to walk with the aid of a leg brace and a cane. He left the facility and lived with one of his brothers for awhile and then got his own apartment. He continues to walk many miles every day. He is still unable to use his left arm. On Jan 4, 2002 he carried the Olympic torch as it passed through South Bend.

In 2004, Tom moved back to Houston. He lives in an apartment near one of his sons.
