Ann Maguire was born and raised in Detroit. She met her future husband, Jim, across the street at her friend Nancy Kelly's. According to Jim's parents, Leon and Laura, Jim was going to the library quite frequently while a student at the University of Detroit when he announced that he was engaged. Finally, Jim's parents and brothers, Jerry and Bob, got to meet Ann at a cookout.

(They had actually lived behind one another when they were very young before Ann's parents moved a few blocks further away to Steele.)

They were married on June 22, 1963, just a week after Jim's graduation from UofD. They moved from their apartment on Santa Rosa after Kevin was born to a house on Ward, two blocks from Jim's parents on Littlefield.

After Katie's birth in 1966, Ann became involved in La Lache League (an international support group for breastfeeding) and became a leader. At the 1968 LLL conference in Chicago, newborn Colleen and Ann got to share an elevator with Princess Grace of Monaco.

Ann continued her LLL leadership after the family's move to Cincinnatti in 1970 and in 1973 Maureen was born. Just down the street Ann met Betty Pedotto who would become one of her dearest friends. The Pedottos moved to Michigan and a year later Jim and Ann followed them, finding a home near Betty and Vince in Clawson.

After all the kids were in school full time, Ann worked as an assistant at Gateway Montessori and completed coursework at Oakland Community College to get her Associate's Degree. In 1986, she accepted a job at Clawson High School in the main office, where she would work for the next thirteen years until her retirement after Jim's death in 1997.

After thirty years in the Clawson home on Chocolay, Ann moved into a nearby condominium which would give her greater ease in visiting the cottage in Charlevoix as well as visiting her children and grandchildren in Chicago, New York, Dexter (MI) and Royal Oak.

Ann remains close with her five siblings who often get together for annual leaf rakings and weddings, and with her mother, Melanie, who lives in Dearborn at the Henry Ford Village.
